How can you tell if schools are suitable for gifted children?

I need to find the best possible school for my gifted son.

Expert answer

1. ask schools what they do to extend the top 10% of students and how they differentiate for them
2. ask if/how they identify their gifted students
3. ask what percentage of staff are trained in gifted education
4. ask to see their action plan for gifted students

All state schools are required to identify and cater for their gifted students (according to the Action Plan 2008-2010). You can refer to the Education Queensland policy documents to learn more about educating gifted students. In the Queensland framework and guidelines to acceleration you can see there are options for identifying and extending bright children -

Any school could use these documents to help them with their action for their top (ability) 10% of the student population.
