Gifted Children who are not Achieving at School: 12 Evidence-Free Explanations which Parents Should No Longer Swallow

After a general introduction to gifted leaners with disability (sometimes called ‘twice-exceptional’ children - the two exceptionalities being the giftedness on the one hand and the ‘something else’ on the other), this practical presentation will focus on the myriad of obstacles, distractors and excuses which sometimes get in the way of identifying twice-exceptional children early enough to properly address, remediate or treat the second exceptionality, thereby reversing the underachievement.

This session will consider why some gifted children may choose to NOT read or write. Our discussions will be informed by watching portions of the films ‘Outside the Square’ about why some children don’t read or write – or just don’t like to.

A range of practical identification procedures, with particular attention to procedures which are effective in identifying gifted students from culturally diverse and disadvantaged groups.  We'll be emphasising the use of a combination of approached rather that a single measure such as IQ testing or teacher nomination used in isolation.

Module 1 Understanding Giftedness

This module contains the essential information a teacher needs to understand the nature of giftedness and talent; what the terms mean; levels and types of giftedness.  It covers the cognitive and affective characteristics of gifted and talented students over the years of schooling and introduces teachers to key concepts.
