TPD-3    ------Teacher Professional Development 3 -

Differentiation in the Classroom

Presenter: Gail Young

When specifically looking at the needs of gifted learners, important issues of curriculum arise:

  • Gifted students need a challenging curriculum that addresses their needs for pace and complexity.
  • Gifted students require teaching and scaffolding for their learning but may not require the level of repetition and support needed by other less able students.
  • Gifted students may require accelerated programs if they are to be optimally engaged and challenged.

Differentiation should be a priority of all teachers to meet the needs of gifted students. This workshop will engage participants in how curriculum differentiation provides a framework to necessitate modifications to the curriculum in the areas of content, process product and learning environment.

About the Presenter: Gail Young is Acting Head of Curriculum and the Gifted Education Mentor (GEM) at Holland Park State School.  She has a Masters Degree in Special Education with specialisation in Gifted and Talented Students and is an experienced Early Phase teacher.  Gail acknowledges and facilitates quality whole school educational programs for gifted students from prep to year 7 assisting with creating differentiated curriculum and acceleration for identified gifted students.  Gail accepts challenge and positively responds to support her colleagues to overcome underachievement and sustain partnerships with all stakeholders in providing support for gifted students.  Gail is a member of the QAGTC Inc state central committee and an information volunteer counsellor with QAGTC.
